City traffic - the cyclist's city

Not many cities compares to Copenhagen in terms of sustainable transport. On a daily basis, Copenhageners use their bikes more than any other Europeans, e.g. when they go to work or their place of education or when they go to one of the many green oases in the city.

Copenhagen is the cyclist’s city. Both Copenhageners, tourists and the dry statistics bear witness to this:

  • Cyclists in Copenhagen pedal a total of 1.1 million kilometers – every day! That is the equivalent of a couple of brisk cycle trips to the moon and back.
  • There is a total of 350 km of cycle tracks and 40 km of green cycle routes in Copenhagen. This is the length of Jutland.
  • One out of three people in Copenhagen go to work or school by bike every day.

The benefits of having so many cyclists in a major city are clear. Just in terms of the environment, cyclists keep CO2 traffic emissions down compared to other major cities. When we achieve our goal of 50% of the population cycling to work or school, we will be able to save an additional 80,000 tons of C02 emissions annually in the traffic of Copenhagen.
