In the summer of 2009, a green roof was landscaped on top of the new National Archives at the corner of Bernstorffsgade and Kalvebod Brygge. The roof takes up 7,200 m2 and consists of outdoor areas, a cycle track and a large, publicly accessible roof garden with grass, ground covering plants and shrub tubs. The public may use the roof garden as a recreational green area for relaxation and sunbathing while they enjoy the silence and the sight and smell of the plants. The roof garden by the name ”The green street" is a quiet urban space close to the harbour, secluded from the noise of the city. The green roof garden serves as a green street for pedestrians and cyclists. The street connects Bernstorffsgade and the domicile of SEB Bank to the north with Tivoli Congress Center to the south. The street will, in time, make it possible for pedestrians and cyclists to walk and cycle on an interconnected green path all the way from Bernstorffsgade to the bridge by Dybbølsbro Station. A green roof garden is being landscaped on the roof of a nursery school in the Gyldenris Park on Amager. It is due to open in 2013. The roof garden will be laid out as a garden of sensation with herbs, berry and fruit shrubs combined with a playground. The roof garden is a project aiming at displaying the purpose and full range of green roofs to architects, advisers, developers and others – from the minimalistic roof with small herbs to the wide-scale roof garden with bushes and trees. Display projects like this can contribute to raise the awareness necessary to get as far as or even further than other metropolises around the world in terms of green roofs. The Gyldenris Park Project is a classic example of a roof construction with small load reserves (ca. 50 kg/m²). The construction is made of six layers as shown in the description. The method permits the landscaping of a very light green roof with no great demands on flowering and biodiversity. In the housing cooperative Bangsbo on Høgholtvej 15-17 the residents have decided to plant the roofs of two buildings in the yard used for waste. The green roofs provide the residents with a greener view towards the yard and ensure a more eco-friendly handling of the rain water which consequently causes less load on the sewers. Copenhagen is developing rapidly and the City is growing. Therefore, a new neighbourhood is under development in Nordhavn (the North Harbour). Nordhavn is located close to central Copenhagen and the sea and has a great potential for becoming a new and vibrant area of the capital. An area which in the long run may provide housing for up to 40,000 residents and generate a corresponding number of jobs, equalling the number of people and jobs in all of Central Østerbro. The vision for the area is to set a new standard for sustainable urban development, taking into account the challenges of climate change. Therefore, a demand for landscaping green roofs in Nordhavn is a part of the vision. The winners of the Nordhavn development project competition is Cobe, Sleth and Rambøll.
