Cycle tracks are the familiar, tarmacked cycle paths separated by kerbs from both the cars on the road and the pedestrians on the pavement. Cycle lanes on the other hand, are on the same level as the road and are marked by a broad white line. It costs roughly DKK 8 million to construct 1 kilometre of cycle track and DKK 500,000 to add road markings and create 1 kilometre of cycle lane.
The City of Copenhagen has drawn up a map showing the city’s cycling options -including all cycle tracks, cycle lanes and green cycle routes. You can see the map as a pdf file or order free copies below:Cycling map Copenhagen
Statistics show that the more cycle tracks there are, and the wider they get, the more Copenhagen residents use their bikes. Every time the City of Copenhagen builds a cycle track on a road, 20% more cyclists (and 10% fewer cars) use that stretch. Getting more cycle tracks is high on Copenhageners’ wish list.In 2008 alone, nearly 5 kilometres of new cycle tracks were built and improvements were made to approx. 4 kilometres of existing tracks.
A plan has been drawn up for a number of new cycle tracks and cycle lanes to be created in Copenhagen over the coming years. The so-called Cycle Track Priority Plan covers the period 2006-2026 and states the order in which almost 70 kilometres of new cycle tracks and cycle lanes will be built. The current cost of implementing the Cycle Track Priority Plan is approx. DKK 400 million. Not available in English
