Amager Beach Park (Amager Strandpark) is located in the charmingly rugged area of Amager. The beach park is a real beach with sand, sand- castles and ice cream stalls, but unlike with so many other beaches, the city remains unmistakeably present here. The idea for Amager Beach Park was conceived more than 25 years ago following suggestions from a number of local associations. They managed to create political interest and the plans for the project really took off in the 1990s. In December 2003, the project was put out to tender for competitive quotes. Initial work commenced on 27 May 2004 and the beach was opened in August 2005.The beach park is large (it was designed to accommodate 50,000 visitors) and gives the impression that it continues forever. An artificial island, three kilometres long, has also been constructed off the old beach. The island is divided into two sections: a natural sandy beach with winding paths and lyme-grass sand dunes, and a "city-beach", which has lush green areas and a wide pier.
