City Council

The City Council

The City Council is the supreme political authority in the City of Copenhagen. Its 55 members who are elected for a four-year term, outline the framework for the responsibilitites and duties of the committees.

The Lord Mayor is the Chairman of the City Council. He/she convenes the meeting of the City Council and sets the agenda and chairs the discussion at meetings.

Meetings of the City Council are announced in the daily and local press. Members of the public and the press are entitled to attend the meetings, except when issues of confidentiality are on the agenda.

The meeting agendas are available on the Council's website. Furthermore, they are available at the Copenhagen public libraries and during meetings in the public gallery. After a meeting, a record of resolutions is prepared; this is available at the Council's website.

The Finance Committee consists of 13 members, with the Lord Mayor as the chairperson. The six mayors of the standing committees are on the Finance Committee, as are six other members of the City Council. Each of the standing committees has 11 members, including the mayor of the corresponding administration, who chairs the committee.
