What is CITY FOR ALL?
CITY FOR ALL is a programme run by the City of Copenhagen, Technical and Environment Administration which is working with making the city more accessible. Our programme is committed to the international charter for walking, by Walk21.
Walking is the first thing an infant wants to do and the last thing an old person wants to give up.John Butcher, Founder Walk21, 1999
Health & Environment / Climate are two key points of reference when dealing with a pedestrian minded city, along with several other important issues, such as:
- Accessibility - Comfort- Safety - Sense of Safety- Information
All of the above plays a major part in making the city of Copenhagen a place for pedestrians, and a place for people. CITY FOR ALL is working by a main principle called Universal Design. Universal Design covers Accessibility, Comfort and Safety, and is key stone in the foundation of the philosophy behind CITY FOR ALL. The city is a place for everyone and Universal design starts from the point of view, that the city will be furnished for people of all ages. It is design which offers opportunities instead of setting limits.
How do we do it?
- First of all - we ask the people of Copenhagen what they need. - Secondly we try to incorporate all the key points of Universal Design into the planning of the city - so we can ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to use the city at will. - Thirdly - we provide information. Information is an important factor when it comes to motivating people to walk instead of taking the car or a bus.
Our main goal is that by 2012
- at least 50% of Copenhageners will be ‘generally satisfied’ with accessibility in the streets, squares and urban space of the city (today’s figure:41%) - at least 90% of those working in the Traffic and Environment Department will know what accessibility is (today’s figure:89%) - at least 66% of employees working in the Traffic and Environment Department will answer that they work with accessibility (today’s figure:64%)
