Copenhagen: Green investments pay off
18. november 2011
The Lord Mayor of Copenhagen is currently in Australia with more than 50 Danish clean tech companies. Like Sydney and Melbourne, Copenhagen has ambitious plans for carbon neutrality.
Recent studies shows that the green investments in Copenhagen is not only beneficial for the environment and the climate, they also boost the economy.
Copenhagen’s green city strategy has not only brought great reductions in the CO2 emissions, decreased pollution, created several green jobs and produced annual growth rates of an impressive 12 percent in the clean tech sector.
The cities green ambitions have also triggered a great improvement of the quality of life for the citizens of Copenhagen and created growth, export and job opportunities throughout the entire economy of the city – not just in the clean-tech sector.
” Our experience shows that investments in green urban development deliver economic benefits. A good example is cycling: Almost half of the Copenhageners use their bike to work and school every day. A recent study shows that we are avoiding external costs of more than 40 million AUD because of this every year”, says the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen.
The Lord Mayor is in Australia together with His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess of Denmark and more than 50 Danish companies to promote Danish clean tech solutions. The visit involves business meetings with the Mayors of Sydney and Melbourne and smart city-seminars in both cities.
”Cities around the world are different, but we all need to adapt to a changing climate, handle waste, deliver drinking water, deliver services to citizens and create jobs for our citizens. The ability to find and share efficient solutions to these common challenges gives us the possibility to secure quality of life, promote economic growth and reduce carbon emissions at the same time”, says the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen.
